“We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
The Apostles were brought in. Before the Sanhedrin they stood.
Questioned by the high priest—this high priest was up to no good.
He said strict orders had been given, to stop teaching in that name.
Yet you filled Jerusalem with your teaching; as if to pin on them some blame.
Then Peter and the Apostles, put forth that famous reply:
We must obey God rather than men. In obedience, our Lord had died.
The Apostles would honor Jesus—do what Jesus willed.
God had raised up Jesus; though Jesus had been killed.
Of these things they bore witness. But over what was stated
The Sanhedrin just grew angry—and infuriated.
The Apostles must be silenced. Not a tear would they shed,
If the Apostles were killed; they wanted the Apostles dead.
No matter what comes at us Lord, through our nights and our days,
May it be You we seek to please, and God Whom we obey.
Our earthly journey full of tests—grant us grace to endure;
May we one day reach heaven’s gates, through You, our One Savior.
